My first day having class with teacher Sylvia…

Love yourself before you can love someone else.

— Author Unknown

The day my firsts actual english classes began in the icesi university was the january 20 of 2020. I’ve never had english class in icesi before, well, not an actual sign up classes, I remember I participated in teacher’s Abril classes long time ago but I wasn’t actually in the list; but that’s a story for another day.

That day we were introduced on how our classes were going to be, what were the rules and the basics. The teacher gave us an activity, we had to write down a short text about whatever we wanted to write about, we could even write down “I don’t know what to write” but I had my own idea by the time the teacher said start. I remember my partner Natalia said she was hungry, so I immediately remembered what I had for lunch a few hours ago, so I decided to write about it, here it is:

I like vegetables when I take lunch at the university because I usually don’t have them at home, at least not in the same quantity that I can have here at icesi, today I had double vegetables portion on lunch, it cost me an extra 1600 pesos plus the usual 8000 pesos. To be honest they were too steamed, I love them more when they’re fresh and crunchy, specially carrots, green peas and green beans.

Derby Writing: What have we done with us?

It seems like we’ve been destroying our world, we as humans have not been able to live together with our surroundings, whatever we touch, we destroy it, we are careless towards other animals and living creatures, we’ve surrounded ourselves with this selfishness and loneliness that it seems like we’ve forgot what is important for us, the world itself, we should take care of it, we should be more caring towards the others, specially the animals and our similars, all we care about is greed, all we do is destroy, we fight over stupid things like money and land, when we all know that at the end of our lives we won’t have anything left but what we’ve done, what we’ve lived and what we’ve stand for, it’s all that we are going to take with us when we depart this cruel yet beautiful world.

Short-Paragraph Final Draft: Who’s in control?

Computer games are very addictive in fact and  they are also time-consuming activities that can lead people into bad habits and misbehavior towards their life in general, this of course is the kind of addiction that you can’t stop doing on a daily basis, that’s when it becomes problematic. It can even end up destroying your career and your social and financial life, when you’re isolating yourself in front of a computer screen and leaving your obligations apart, whether they’re studying or job ones. Although this could be possible, in the long run it all falls into people’s own decisions, whether they decide to play games and avoid their realities or learn how to spend their time correctly in order to have the control of their own actions. Eventually, people who are addicts to any kind of thing could end up badly, in bad situations in general, the key word here is “Controlling your own behaviors”. Therefore, for people not to fall into addictions of any kind they have to learn how to spend their time correctly, interacting with others in general, going out with friends or a loved one, in order not to keep themselves isolated from society and to be a functional and rational adult that can and have to keep themselves on check.

Short Paragraph, First Draft: Computer games have a negative effect on individuals.

Outline:

Main idea: Computer games have a negative effect on individuals

Arguments:

-Computer games are addictive and time consuming activities.

-It can destroy people’s career, social and financial life.

-Addictions in general are bad, people need to learn to have control on their lives.

-People need to learn how to spend their time correctly, not satanizing any kind of entertainful activity such as video games.

The day I almost got mugged. (Personal story)

I remember I was coming out of the USC university (that time when I used to study there). I was riding my bike as usual, but out of nowhere when I was crossing the ninth avenue I had a bad feeling, a sense of foreboding that was telling me not to stop at any traffic lights (I usually try not to because robbers tend to catch you when you’re standing still on your bike). I then rode my bike like the wind, I didn’t stop, not even once until I got to the sixteenth avenue with guadalupe, I was almost at home, I turned right and looked behind me and I saw a bald guy around sixteen or eighteen years old that was staring at me weirdly, I didn’t really cared about it at first, but when I was crossing the sixteenth avenue and I had to stop, I looked behind again and saw the guy was trying to pull something out of his right pocket, I got scared and I immediately tried to ride away from there but the guy grabbed my shirt and tried to pull me saying “esta gonorrea”. Little did he knew how I was going to react, I had a sunburn so when he pulled me, my fear turned into anger and blind rage, I let him pass me and then I jumped into him out of my bike and I catched him from his clothes. He dragged me like 2 meters on his bike, but when we got close to the sideway, I used all of my strength to pull him down against the sideway (while he was still dragging me).

We both felt to the ground and unluckily for him, he had his knife unraveled on his right hand and he got cut on his wrist when I pulled him down. I had a lot of mixed feelings (fear, anger) and adrenaline was pumping me up, I standed up as soon as I could and the robber was trying to grab his knife again (it felt away a few centimeters from him) but then I kicked it away from him, my reaction was faster than his, then I grabbed him by his neck with my right arm and I started choking him. He couldn’t do anything but scream and try to get off my rear naked choke grip, but I was like twice his size and weight and I was also on an adrenaline rush (I was choking him really hard), then I yelled at the Super Burger workers that were in the other side of the sixteenth street and they came to my aid, I left the robber out of my grip and they called the police. When the police got there he was crying and he was saying that I was going to rob him (pretty funny honestly, I was wearing my USC university uniform) and he was also coughing and crying (his face was red, I almost killed him by choking). A few minutes later it got all crowded and the neighbours around there came to see what was happening, 2 policeman came in a motorcycle and then later they called to “La marrana” (that’s a big truck where policeman put criminals in) I grabbed my bike and walked away from there, the police also had to call an ambulance because the robber was injured and was bleeding out of his wrist. In the end 3 friends of mine were close to the events and saw what happened, they started asking me questions, I felt better at that moment and I also didn’t want to get medical care, the policemen were calling me but I yelled “Yo estoy bien no pasa nada” I was worried that the dude might remember my face so I just got away from there as soon as I could.

To be honest I got lucky, I could’ve been stabbed or critically injured, but it didn’t happen thanks to the Lord. I got some minor scratches, my backpack was the one that took the impact and the drag away damage from the floor when I jumped to the robber, it was a total loss. This experience taught me to be very careful when riding my bike and always look everywhere when I’m riding my bike, I’m always aware of my surroundings and who’s close to me when I’m on the street either walking or riding my bike, and that’s it, thanks for reading this personal experience of mine, see you next time!

Summary

First draft:

In order to become a good writer, one has to develop good reading habits; but this does not happen only by reading itself, one has to comprehend what’s the context of text and the structure on individual sentences. Only when we grasp the ideas that are expressed, one can really understand and start producing better written content. As one begins to apply the knowledge one has learned through reading and writing.

Our first draft was clearly not citing the autor, and also one of our sentences was too long, we were missing 2 sentences more in order to create a 5 sentences paragraph as teacher silvia asked us to do.

Final Summary:

In order to become a good writer, according to the text “Learning to Read and Write” by Dan Kurland (2000) you have to develop good reading habits. But this by itself does not happen by reading only, you also have to comprehend what’s the context of a text; on individual sentences and in a whole paragraph. Only when you can truly grasp the ideas that are expressed on each of these, you can really start producing better written content. As you start applying the knowledge you’ve acquired through practice both in reading and writing (syntactic and semantic comprehension each accordingly); You can start “realizing what we already know” by writing in a more resourceful manner like the author we might be trying to imitate. Probably in similar manners as how he arguments or states his facts or perhaps even better.

My first vignette…

It was an usual day like any other, until my brother arrived home with his new brand playstation. I couldn’t belive it at the beginning, but then he put on a Castlevania’s disk on it, my first impression was astonishment, the game starting screen was so beautiful yet so dark and scary and when the game began to play, a hard-rock music could be listened on its background… and there he was, Richter Belmont from the legendary Belmont vampire hunter clan challenging Dracula for the fate and freedom of humankind.

Ritcher won the battle at the end, a hard fought one, but not without sacrificing himself to deal with Dracula, rumors say that he didn’t die, he just went missing. Then after the story explanation background letters were over I could finally play with Alucard, the son of Dracula. Then I knew I’d be loving videogames from this point onward.

Welcome ladies and gentlemen!

Love will find a way through paths where wolves fear to prey.” -George Gordon Byron

First of all I want to welcome you to my personal english blog, it’ll be an interesting experience writing down here since I’m kinda new to this kind of things. As a child, I never did something similar to writing down a personal diary or anything likely.

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Javier Giraldo Ramirez and I’m 27 years old, I was born in 24 june on 1992 here in Cali, Colombia. If I’d choose a few words to describe myself I’d use kind-hearted and a little bit trollish, I like to joke about stuff and I try to make fun of things the most I can, one of my life mottos is “if you can’t enjoy your time, don’t waste it” whether it would be with friends, family or people in general, if you don’t find yourself comfortable in a place, move, you’re not a tree!
