I remember I was coming out of the USC university (that time when I used to study there). I was riding my bike as usual, but out of nowhere when I was crossing the ninth avenue I had a bad feeling, a sense of foreboding that was telling me not to stop at any traffic lights (I usually try not to because robbers tend to catch you when you’re standing still on your bike). I then rode my bike like the wind, I didn’t stop, not even once until I got to the sixteenth avenue with guadalupe, I was almost at home, I turned right and looked behind me and I saw a bald guy around sixteen or eighteen years old that was staring at me weirdly, I didn’t really cared about it at first, but when I was crossing the sixteenth avenue and I had to stop, I looked behind again and saw the guy was trying to pull something out of his right pocket, I got scared and I immediately tried to ride away from there but the guy grabbed my shirt and tried to pull me saying “esta gonorrea”. Little did he knew how I was going to react, I had a sunburn so when he pulled me, my fear turned into anger and blind rage, I let him pass me and then I jumped into him out of my bike and I catched him from his clothes. He dragged me like 2 meters on his bike, but when we got close to the sideway, I used all of my strength to pull him down against the sideway (while he was still dragging me).
We both felt to the ground and unluckily for him, he had his knife unraveled on his right hand and he got cut on his wrist when I pulled him down. I had a lot of mixed feelings (fear, anger) and adrenaline was pumping me up, I standed up as soon as I could and the robber was trying to grab his knife again (it felt away a few centimeters from him) but then I kicked it away from him, my reaction was faster than his, then I grabbed him by his neck with my right arm and I started choking him. He couldn’t do anything but scream and try to get off my rear naked choke grip, but I was like twice his size and weight and I was also on an adrenaline rush (I was choking him really hard), then I yelled at the Super Burger workers that were in the other side of the sixteenth street and they came to my aid, I left the robber out of my grip and they called the police. When the police got there he was crying and he was saying that I was going to rob him (pretty funny honestly, I was wearing my USC university uniform) and he was also coughing and crying (his face was red, I almost killed him by choking). A few minutes later it got all crowded and the neighbours around there came to see what was happening, 2 policeman came in a motorcycle and then later they called to “La marrana” (that’s a big truck where policeman put criminals in) I grabbed my bike and walked away from there, the police also had to call an ambulance because the robber was injured and was bleeding out of his wrist. In the end 3 friends of mine were close to the events and saw what happened, they started asking me questions, I felt better at that moment and I also didn’t want to get medical care, the policemen were calling me but I yelled “Yo estoy bien no pasa nada” I was worried that the dude might remember my face so I just got away from there as soon as I could.
To be honest I got lucky, I could’ve been stabbed or critically injured, but it didn’t happen thanks to the Lord. I got some minor scratches, my backpack was the one that took the impact and the drag away damage from the floor when I jumped to the robber, it was a total loss. This experience taught me to be very careful when riding my bike and always look everywhere when I’m riding my bike, I’m always aware of my surroundings and who’s close to me when I’m on the street either walking or riding my bike, and that’s it, thanks for reading this personal experience of mine, see you next time!
